A Britcellist's World - 

Welcome to my new monthly blog at Blogger! Sadly, my Cozi blog of 12 years was shut down on November 23rd, 2020.  It was too much for that company having to deal with millions of subscribers and photos.  This new blog will be short but very sweet to finish up the end of November. 


November 24 - 

I teach live to an adult student! She has a lovely house - we can be out on the patio in the back, in the garage if it's chilly or on this day, on the front porch. You can just about see her cello on the chair - I was very nervous about it falling off😨 We had just finished a good lesson in the warm sun.  


Nov. 26 - A very special Thanksgiving this year with my niece Angela, who had come from Hong Kong to be with her eldest daughter and new baby for a few weeks. The family live in Seattle, so Angela flew to NC to visit her middle daughter Michelle, and son-in-law JB,  for Thanksgiving, and I was invited too! My Dan and his family were lockdown in NJ as there was a possible virus scare at a home of some friends. Fortunately all were negative and safe, but it was too late for them to make it down to NC in time for Thanksgiving. It was only an hour and a half to Michelle and JB's home from me, and driving along the gorgeous trees and local roads made a very enjoyable journey. Their house was in a very large gated community with several lakes surrounding the houses.  


Thanksgiving was truly a special one this year, the first time I've had my South African family members in North Carolina, and Michelle and JB went all out, as you can see!


I stayed overnight, and after a delicious breakfast and lots of catching up,  drove back home to feed my cats. I don't think they starved, and probably slept all the time. 
At least, they had some company while I was gone!


Nov. 28 was a musical treat with members of the Chapel Hill Philharmonia. Of course the orchestra is shut down, but small groups have got together to play chamber music. Today it was a piano trio and we played through 2 movements of Beethoven's Trio #1 and the first movement of  Trio #2. Because of the piano we play indoors in a large home, plenty of air and of course, masked. A wonderful way to end the month!

Happy New Year!

January 1, 2023 - I couldn't stay awake long enough to see the fireworks, but I'm sure they were exciting going around the world, from Sidney's bridge to Paris, London Eye, New York, Los Angeles and many more.  We all had a good sleep afterwards as the family had to drive back to New Jersey, (good weather, fortunately). Late in the morning, we couldn't resist having brunch at our  favorite restaurant in Durham, - Elmo's.  A good start for the trip. Sad to see them off, it had been a lovely visit, despite being it was a short one, as the weather had been so bad up north the week before Christmas, they were not able to drive until Christmas Day :(   Two days to catch up and tidying up, then back to teaching at Trinity School and the Chapel Hill Music School, followed that night by a very enjoyable concert by a string quartet from musicians from the North Carolina Symphony at  Carol Woods. October, 2022.

Going into October was dreadful with Hurricane Ian destroying Florida and further north. It will take years to rebuild so many areas.  Chapel Hill and most of the area around the middle of North Carolina were spared. Getting back to normality at home was not easy - leaving England, getting back to both schools, making up lessons that had been missed. Not many students understood why I went away for a week. The younger ones of course, didn't know about the Queen of England. I wrote a separate blog of the Queen's Funeral, if anyone not on the list of the blog and wants to read it, email me and I will give you the address.   I was glad to have been in good shape for the 12 hours of walking at night and other times around London.  Our hike leader Rodney, knows most of the trails in Chapel Hill, Durham and further away, so we have plenty of trails to keep walking. December, 2022

December came along fast, starting with enjoyable playing a morning of string quartets!  Dec. 3rd - Our walking group chose to walk indoors as raining was coming down quite ferociously. Instead we went in to the Carolina Inn, Chapel Hill's oldest hotel.  Every December, elaborate decorations are festively adorned all over the inn, in the lobby and in the many  festivities in the ballrooms. For children - meet Santa Claus and Brunch with Santa. We followed around the arrangements of the 12 Days of Christmas where each  set up.  Here are a couple.        After that, we walked quickly in the rain to the UNC Ackland Art Museum, where the transformative gift of over 130 drawings by the late Drs Sheldon and Leena Peck.
